Crime and Immigration – Sweden 2000s
The exponential growth in crime rates is often linked to influxes of immigration in countries with populations lower than 15 million residents such as the Nordic countries. These links are widely discussed in modern society connecting the rapid increase in crime to immigration and integrational issues which in turn has seen a rise in right-wing politics and robust regulations for immigrants and asylum seekers.

With focus to the percentage increase in crimes compared to population growth prior to immigration waves shows a clear pattern that this belief is incongruent. The total number of crimes reported had decreased in respects to population increase showing after an all-time high in 2007.
Suburbs with heavy immigrant population did see a surge in serious crimes such as gang-violence, rape and murder. This can be the reason behind the belief that immigration led to crime increase as it was these specific areas where most of the crimes occur. The most common being in the three greatest cities of Sweden: Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.
A further look into these reported crimes shows that a higher percentage of these were caused in relation to gang and drug warfare between immigrant minorities conflicts over various territories. All most all of these crimes were committed by second generation immigrants who lacked upper level education and were offspring’s of people without any upper level education in the lower bracket of society in regards to income.
The location of these crimes is also important as Malmö is the most southern city connecting Sweden to Denmark and most smuggled narcotics and weapons are usually driven through this city from Eastern Europe to make their way into the Nordic countries. Stockholm and Gothenburg are much known for gang related crimes as they are cities located on both coasts which have greater ports connecting them to other parts of northern Europe.
As for terrorism, Sweden has one of the lowest links of fighters going to hot zones countries to fight in foreign wars. Although Sweden has experience another terrorist attack in 2017 it is a very uncommon incident in regards to the amount of foreigners coming in from these hot zone countries.
Economic immigration is a well-known term stating immigrants from third world countries exploit Swedens’ generous social welfare system for self-gains rather than putting effort into improves society in viable ways. This is usually aimed at immigrants from countries with the weakest passports such as Somalia and Syria.
The countries these immigrants have come from have relatively high illiteracy rates and mostly are from Middle Eastern or African cultures which contrast the Nordic lifestyle. This gives the first generation of immigrants a wide disadvantage in climbing up the socioeconomical ladder or assimilation as their initial efforts when entering the new country is working full time to support their families both in Sweden and their homeland. Since the working class immigrants usually are in basic paid jobs without opportunity to improve they are prone to put a greater focus on the governing council for grants or financial aid in other ways. This is usually seen in a large number of offspring’s in a household which means they’re eligible to greater grants to aid their kids but the money is usually invested elsewhere effecting the kids mind philosophy on a long term basis.
In contrast to the economic immigrants: People with university level education that have come from hot zone countries have been one of the most successful assimilation stories known in the nordic region having great insight in dentistry, IT, medical research and subjects alike. It is also common for the offsprings of these first generation immigrants to have similar levels of education. Making them less prone to jobs in the lower paying bracket, having a stable income and the opportunity to improve society in ways that helps decrease the cultural fusion. Although a number of children from well educated parents have a great amount of pressure on them during their early years of their educational life and have had a note-ably high level of suicide or mental instability.
Thus increase in crime and immigration has a valid coloration but not in the context used in the media. The links are more accurately described as crime and low level educated parts of society struggling to break the socioeconomic barrier due to lack of integration and wrongly resource allocations. With a declining middle and upper class and greater focuses on upper level education jobs in the gilded ages, there’s a lower need for industrial jobs which a large portion of the people from this immigrant group fit in leaving them to finding other ways to make money such as abuse in the social system or crime.
What voice can a taxi driver or a train conductor have compared to a low level office employee of a major bank? Trains and cars will be driverless in the near future whereas banks won't. The gilded ages need their requirements to be filled by investing in people who study the subjects needed in the future to improve society and the economy: Not one or the other.
